Health Insurance It is ironic that Virginia has 3 of the wealthiest counties in the country, yet has one of the worst health care systems in the country.  Loudoun, Farifax and Arlington Counties rank as the top three counties in the US for household income.  Yet. more than 1 million Virginians don't have health insurance.  That is 1 out of 8 Virginians who do not have health insurance!  To make matters worse Virginia is one of the most restrictive states for eligibility for Medicaid.  An individual must earn less than $6,000 per year to be eligible for Medicaid in Virginia.  Nationally, the number of uninsured has fallen, but in Virginia the number continues to increase.  Despite the new regulations that extend coverage for young adults on their family policies we are adding more people to the population of uninsured Virginians every day.

As an insurance agency in Virginia that also provides financial services we regularly advise clients regarding matters like health insurance, life insurance and retirement. Recently we have been receiving calls from people looking for health insurance.  When most of the callers hear what the prices are they go into sticker shock. The cost of health insurance robs valuable resources that could be put toward college educations and retirement accounts.  Health insurance has become so expensive that a large percentage of our population simply cannot afford it.  As a result 10 Virginians die each week of preventable diseases because they did not have health insurance.  The financial and human costs associated with the uninsured are staggering.  These costs are generational.  Meaning, that the effects of this health care crisis will be felt by generations of Virginians who will not have had the opportunity to go to college or to save for retirement or who may have had to grow up without a parent.

Health care in our country has recently turned into a political football.  Meanwhile businesses and individuals continue to struggle with the skyrocketing costs of a broken health care system.  I have no doubt that this problem will eventually fix itself.  In this economy we are our brothers keeper whether we want to be or not.  The costs of the uninsured effect us all and those costs are dragging on our national economy and each of our personal economy's.  The hard costs for the uninsured on our healthcare system is more than $50 billion per year and increasing.  The soft costs of lost loved ones, bankruptcies and drained resources are immeasurable. It is only a matter of time before that cost becomes politically unaffordable.  Just like the immigration issue became politically unaffordable so to shall health care.  The tragedy is that many more of our neighbors will unnecessarily die and/or go bankrupt because of a system that does not provide basic care at an affordable price.  For more information go to
